The word of the Lord came to Jonah, son of amity, saying, go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it, for their wickedness has come up before me. But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid his fare and went on board to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a mighty storm came upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried to his God. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down into the hold of the ship and had laid down, and was fast asleep. The captain came to him and said, what are you doing? Sound asleep. Get up. Call on your God. Perhaps the God will spare us a thought so we do not perish. The sailors said to one another, come, let us cast lots, so that we may know on whose account this calamity has come upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. Then they said to him, tell us why this calamity has come upon us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country and of what people are you? I am a Hebrew, he replied. I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. Then the men were even more afraid, and said to him, what is this that you have done? For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them so. Then they said to him, what shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us? For the sea was growing more and more tempestuous. Jonah said to them, pick me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will quiet down for you. For I know it. It is because of me that this great storm has come upon you. Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to land. But they could not. For the sea grew more and more stormy against them. Then they cried out to the Lord, please, oh Lord, we pray, do not let us perish on account of this man's life. Do not make us guilty of innocent blood. For you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you. So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. Then the men feared the Lord even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. But the Lord provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it spewed Jonah out upon the dry land. The word of the Lord. 00:05:35,800 S3: Thanks be to God. 00:05:46,829 S5: You will rescue my life from the pit. O Lord, I call to the Lord out of my distress. And he answered me. out of the belly of shale. I cried and you heard my voice. You will rescue my life from the pit alone. 00:06:18,230 S5: You cast me into the deep. Into the heart of the sea. And the flood surrounded me. All your waves and your billows passed over me. You will rescue my life from the pit alone. 00:06:45,899 S5: Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. 00:06:56,000 S5: I give you a new commandment. Love one another as I have loved you. Hallelujah. 00:07:17,529 S2: The Lord be with you. 00:07:19,129 S3: And with your spirit. 00:07:20,670 S2: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. 00:07:23,970 S3: Glory to you, Lord. 00:07:27,370 S2: A lawyer stood up to test Jesus. Teacher, he said, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, what is written in the law? What do you read there? The lawyer answered, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. And Jesus said to him. You have given the right answer. Do this and you will live. But wanting to justify himself. The lawyer asked Jesus. And who is my neighbor? Jesus replied, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now, by chance, a priest was going down the road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, while traveling came near him, and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day the Samaritan took out two denarii, gave it to the innkeeper, and said. Take care of him. And when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend. Jesus asked, which of these three do you think was your neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? The lawyer said, the one who showed him mercy. Jesus said to him, go and do likewise. 00:09:53,529 S2: The gospel of the Lord. 00:09:56,200 S3: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 00:10:05,029 S2: Once there was a millionaire who collected live alligators, and he kept them in a pool in the back of his mansion. The millionaire also had a beautiful daughter who was single. One day he decided to throw a huge party, during which he announced. My dear guests, I have a proposition to every young man present here. I will give $1 million or my daughter to the man who can swim across this pool full of alligators and emerge unharmed. And as soon as he finished his last word, there was a sound of a large splash. And there was this young man in the pool, swimming with all his might as the crowd kept cheering him. Finally he made it to the other side, unharmed. 00:11:29,669 S2: The millionaire was impressed, and he said, my boy, that was incredible. Fantastic. I did not think it could be done. Well, I must keep my end of the bargain. Now, which do you want? My daughter or $1 million? The guy replied. Listen, I don't want your money, and I don't want your daughter. I just want the guy who pushed me into the water. 00:12:08,830 S2: Sisters and brothers. In a world where some people are willing to push others down rather than lift others up. Our Lord Jesus, through the parable of the Good Samaritan, reminds us that we are called to be good neighbors who care for one another, especially for our neighbors and those in most need. The parable of the Good Samaritan is probably one of the well known parables of Jesus, not just in the Christian circles, but even in our secular world. The Good Samaritan is a worldwide icon of goodness and care for others around us. A while ago, I was listening to the news as I was driving and the news anchor reported that there was an accident where a car was hit and the driver of the car that hit fled the scene, and a good Samaritan helped the injured person in the car that was hit and called 911. Now coming back to the parable, some rabbis restricted the word neighbor to their fellow Jews. Some others gave a little wider definition, but Jesus turned the question inside out. He did not answer the question, who is my neighbor? But answered a different question In who should I be neighbor to? Now, these two questions may seem more or less the same, but they are quite different. The first question is about the other person and how they are to be classified. The second question is about me as to how I should behave towards others around me. So the question for each of us today is who should I be neighbor to? How should I respond to the needs of the people around me? Now, often it is easier to deal with questions that deal with other things or other people out there. But many of the difficult things that challenge us are very much in here within us. It is our attitudes, it is our convictions and so on. Jesus looks each or looks at each of us and says, you are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. He is able to say that because he is not only filled with light and love within himself, but he is the source of light and love. So ask yourselves today, do I care for others, for my family members? For my neighbors? Or am I only focused on myself and on my knees? The other day, a friend of mine forwarded this message that said, life laughs at you when you are unhappy. Life smiles at you when you are happy, but life salutes you when you make others happy. So today we ask the Lord to fill us with his light and with his love, so that we will be good neighbors to one another. Amen. 00:16:26,370 S2: And now let us offer to God our intentions and our prayers with faith for all those in our daily TV mass prayer intentions book we pray to the Lord. 00:16:41,000 S3: Lord, hear our prayer. 00:16:42,470 S2: So, in praise of the child Jesus, give us a child's heart, joyful, trusting and full of love. Bring our prayers and those of the daily TV mass community to God. We pray to the Lord. 00:17:00,230 S3: Lord, hear our prayer. 00:17:01,529 S2: For all of us to be good neighbors and good Samaritans to one another. For through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become for us our spiritual drink. 00:18:34,569 S3: Blessed be God forever. 00:18:40,269 S6: Lord, cleanse me from my sin. 00:18:52,069 S2: Pray, sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, our Almighty Father. 00:18:59,170 S3: Amen. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and eternal God, through Christ. His death we celebrate in love, his resurrection. We confess with the living faith and he is coming in glory. We await with unwavering hope. And so with all the angels and saints. We praise you as without end we acclaim. 00:20:05,829 S5: Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the higher. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! 00:20:39,599 S2: You are indeed holy, oh Lord, the founder of all holiness, make holy. Therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed, and he entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and he gave it to his disciples, saying, take this, all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body which will be given up for you. 00:21:26,269 S2: In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. 00:22:01,400 S2: The mystery of faith. 00:22:06,099 S5: Savior. Savior of the world. For by your cross and resurrection 00:22:15,869 S5: you have set us free. 00:22:21,170 S2: Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation. Giving thanks that you have. Will is worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly, we pray that partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
